Around four weeks old, kittens become extremely curious and will often lick or nibble at anything they find, including the floor. Because of this, it’s important to keep anything toxic well out of their reach. Strong cleaners or chemicals shouldn’t be used around them, as fumes or residue can irritate their developing lungs or make the smallest and weakest babies feel unwell. Using mild, pet-safe cleaning products and keeping the space well-ventilated helps keep their environment safe. Toxic plants should also be kept away, since kittens may lick or chew on them out of curiosity. Even pollen can get on their fur, and at this age they are constantly licking themselves while their mother grooms them.
This highly curious stage usually continues until they are five or six weeks old. After that, they remain interested in exploring, but they won’t be licking everything or trying to put every random object into their mouths.
Unfortunately, some breeders engage in unsafe practices with kittens this young. These actions can put fragile kittens at risk, highlighting the importance of always supervising young animals and keeping them away from anything that could be harmful.
