I have always felt when neonates open their eyes for the first time you can start seeing them making expression, fear, surprised, sleepy, satisfied and safe. When they first open their eyes their reaction is like the world is beautiful, or grasping what they see. They start to realize their existence in this world. Seeing their baby face is the most beautiful experience after they have passed the risky two week period of development. Before this they struggle to find where to nurse and only relied on their scent of smell to guide them. They also start to become mischievous at this point trying to escape their nest and nothing holding them back. Also at this point their hearing is also much more clearer and can make reactions to noise. Which before would not wake them up. Before reaching up to this point they needed to sleep for their body development, those that ate more instead of sleeping will open their eyes later than their other litter mates. But these neonates they are also very strong because of bulking up on mothers milk and they are also the ones that will make it hard for others to nurse if there are 5 or more kittens in the litter. So it is really important to give milk through syringe.
I feel when their eyes open fully for the first time it is their first day of life.
