How Many Cats Should You Get?

The most cats I have ever had before opening a Ragdoll Cattery, were only Two. Back then I thought 10 cats were a lot. But actually not. Since now I am in that situation.

I am not saying 10 cats is the same as three. But the more cats the better. Some cases it depends though. There are some cats that are better off in a single pet household. But a lot of the cats I have had are able to handle being in a multiple cat household. I had to give up one blue bicolor male Ragdoll, because he did not like being around other cats. But 90% of the time it is okay to have multiple cats. The nice thing about multiple cats is you won't be annoying one cat all the time. You will be annoying multiple cats. Cats like their own personal space, so they would not want you up in their space most of the time. Also because you have other cats, the others will be trying to get your attention. Also not every cat is the same. So if you like something about a cat, but there is something else you need, another cat might fulfill that wish.

For example, I like Latte for perfect symmetrical blue lynx bicolor pattern. But she likes being around my husband more than me, even though I raised her since she was a day 1 old. I love Momo for her adorable and sweet personality, she will always come running to me when I call her name and also her eyes are the deepest blue. Chouchou is our most sweetest male cat. He will always welcome any new cat that comes to our door and he will never hit any cat or person, even if you are bullying him.

3 cats from my experience is no different than one cat. Beyond that number, clean up starts to get a little tiring. Because we have 10 or more cats in our cattery, I am cleaning the cattery two times a day. But depending on your standards on clean home, one time might also be enough if you have 10 or more cats in your home.

Also the benefit of having a multiple cat home, is less bugs. I feel like I have my own army of cats to take care of the bugs. Daimeimei is our best bug exterminator. She always stomps on spiders and bugs and doesn't eat them. Her daughter Latte inherited her skills, but tries to eat them, so I let her catch it and then take it away from her before she tries to eat it. Always hear people complaining their cat doesn't go after bugs, I feel happy that my cats take care of them. We still have pest control that come and exterminate all the bugs regularly. But there are still at least 1-3 bugs once in a while.

Also fun fact, in Taiwan they do not use pesticides or other chemicals to keep pests away, because they are more natural. They use cats instead. I saw a lot of stores selling fruit or things that would lure mice or pests, had a cat in the store. I asked out of curiosity why. The store person told me because cats and mice our natural enemies. Before the getting the cats, their store would have mice. Now with the cats, they rarely see mice around and other bugs.
