When I moved in with my husband, I was analyzing all the time trying to figure out what his cats coughing problem was. At first I thought it was the cat tree, because he bought a particle board cat tree. Which has chemicals. Because her coughing would get the worst when in the cat tree. But after removing the cat tree out of the equation. She still was coughing. Then I thought it was because the floor was laminate flooring and those kinds of floors have the highest in toxins and his Levoit air purifier he bought would not remove those or other particles in the air. Since it was not a heavy duty air purifier. I told him about the Dyson air purifier being able to remove formaldehyde and other toxins in the air. Which might help with his cats coughing. So we bought it. We were lucky that the Dyson in Dallas was doing trade in device and get about 20% off. So we could trade a non-working vacuum or his Levoit Air purifier. His Levoit Air purifier was only 150 and we were able to trade little more than 200 for the discount on the Dyson. After installing it, the results showed immediately. His cat stopped coughing. But later on she started coughing once in a while. Then I saw a video on Tiktok where someone posted a video of their cat with the very same symptoms, saying their cat had asthma. And they needed to do the same thing that we are doing now. Trying to keep the air and environment as clean as possible. And use a litter that is hypoallergenic. He was not using a litter that was hypoallergenic at first and was also using chemical cleaning supplies, saying they clean better. I was furious, because I am allergic to these things also. When he started understanding it has an effect on my health and the cats, he stopped using them. Which now is making me realize I should be putting effective natural cleaning supplies on our recommendations list. Since he was so reluctant to change to natural since he thought it doesn't clean well. We use Scoop Away from Costco which is great for cats with Asthma. There is very little dust no smells to cause the allergy. Should also be using a low dust litter to prevent your cat from getting sick. Because they spend the most time in the litter box and the dust will have a health impact on their lungs. I was born with not very good lungs. So I have a dust allergy. So I have always been avoiding using litter with a lot of dust. So the lifestyle that works for me has always been good for the cats also. I did not even think about that high dust litter could harm a cats health also. Which should have been obvious. But luckily I am just as sensitive as cat, so it worked out.
Simple list of what to do with a cat that has asthma
Vacuum 2-3 times a week if have carpets
Clean regularly if start to see little bit of dust build up
Purchase Air Purifier like the bp04 (currently the 04 is out of stock so can work do with bp03)
Use a low dust hypoallergenic litter brand, we recommend Scoop Away
Use natural cleaning products that are pet friendly |
Recommended Natural Cleaning Products
Seventh Generation All Purpose cleaner is very effective in removing grime and grease.
Pink Stuff to tough stains like on the stove or marks on tile
Ecos Detergent non-scented, even the detergent you use could effect them
Avoid press board or particle board cat tree. Use natural wood cat trees and avoid anything with a toxic smell that will be around your cat very often
Feed zero lectin diet and choose a food brand that will reduce your cats symptoms instead of worsening it. The Tender & True brand has been the only brand where we rarely see her coughing. We try feeding her the Hill's science diet and that only made her start coughing again. Feed the brand you see the least coughing.
She now only coughs when she is excited, stress or frightened. Which is a trigger for the coughing. Which is hard to prevent, but it is easy to stop it. We just pet her to calm her and she stops coughing immediately.
