Why am I always going on about lectins. Lectins are actually not that bad. But the issue is when you consumed too much it can have an affect on your health. When my body is healthy, I can handle eating about a 10% diet with lectins. Which is either sorbitol which is made from corn that is high in lectins or other foods. When my body is weak, I cannot handle a 5% diet of lectins. Even ham, where the pork has been raised on corn causes me allergies.
I always thought there was something wrong with cat food brands using corn or soy protein as fillers. After my experience having a very bad allergy with any food I ate, except from Wholefoods. Every where else the food gave me a severe allergic reaction. So I fasted for a month and during that time only ate food from Wholefoods. I later found out my body was sick due to a lack of nutrients over a long period of time and severe stress. And what caused the allergic reaction were foods with lectins or had a lack of nutrients. Which is the fillers that is put in cat food.
Tofu is perfectly fine, because the soy has been processed several times and has removed most of the lectins, causing very little harm to a person's health. But soy protein and soybean flour have a high content of lectins and if consumed frequently or in high concentrations can eventually harm a person's health. Cats are almost size of 1/6 of a human. That means the amount that wouldn't effect our health, if used the same amount would be a higher concentration for a cat. So pet food I always advise customers and other people who own pets to avoid pet food with lectins. Because brands like to rip customers off with high end ingredients and then put a lot legumes, corn or soy bean protein that are very high in lectins to make up for the cost, but still charging a high end price. Because brands think pet owner do not understand. If your cat is well-fit to begin with it does not show immediately. Just like a young person can eat junk food up to their 50s, but then get very unhealthy later on because of the diet they have been eating. Unless they have had a balanced diet with healthy foods or have a healthy lifestyle, their body would start to get ill. Cats that are less fit, which could be because how they grew up or because of their parents, or easily get stressed etc. For these kinds of cats, the effects would show more sooner.
When I first met my husband through a matchmaking service. We chatted on a social app called Wechat. At first he didn't really talk much to me, and because he knew I was running a Ragdoll cattery. He asked me what was wrong with his orange brown cat. Which he adopted from someone else. Whose husband threaten to throw them out if she did not find the two cats a new home. He took both of them in. My husband is a very sweet person. Back to the story. He showed me a picture of his cat with a swelled belly. He said he went to the vet and even did CT exam and the vet still didn't know what was wrong with his cat. I asked him to tell me the brand of food he feeds the cat. Because it's most likely because of the cat's diet. Since a lot of illnesses are due to lifestyles and diet. He gave me the brands name and I immediately saw several ingredients high in lectins. I told him its because the food he bought his cat has lectins. And explained to him it prevents the absorption of nutrients. He told me this is the most recommended brand on Dealmoon and the price was expensive and made his cats fur really nice. I explained to him it's because of the fish oil and has nothing to do with the nutrients in the food. It is just something to make customers think the food is working, because the fur is an external result. When raising my first cat I did a lot of research and found it was pretty common for expensive cat food brands to put some fancy ingredients and then throw a lot of cheap ingredients or bad ingredients into the mix. So when it comes to cat food, expensive does not mean better.
At first he was reluctant to listen to my advice, because this brand was commonly recommended. I explained to him, that this kind of cat food does not effect cats that are already healthy. But for cats that are more sensitive or frail it would cause the cat to become very unhealthy. Which is why his other cat seemed perfectly fine. He listened to me, then later on he contacted me again, saying I was right and then showed me a picture of his cat stomach being normal again. He thought after this experience he thought that I knew so much about cats, and started asking how to solve his cats coughing problem. I did not have any experience in that area. So I had no idea what to say. After moving in with him. We later found out his cat had asthma. We were going all in the right direction though without knowing. Which was me directing all the way. Which is another blog to write about.
