Cats are only able to show affection in a limited amount ways. For example, a cat hunting for a mouse and bringing it back to their owner or the person they want to thank or love. To us it is weird, but to them this is one of the limited ways of showing they like you.
Cats will rub against people they like a lot, and bumping heads or rubbing heads against is another way of affection for them. Also talking to you with a cheerful tone is their way of showing they enjoy your presence. There is so much to cover how they show affection and every cat shows affection differently. My husbands cat loves doing nose kisses with me very often and cheerfully meowing towards me. She will also rub her face on me with a lot strength.
My other Siamese mix shows affection: as I am the only one that he will follow without a leash for walks outside. He is the only cat I can trust so much to not run away when taking walks outside.
Cats not showing affection or seem too cool. There are cats not on showing so much affection. Tuzaizi, my siamese mix is partially one of those cats. He will not always come to me when I call his name. But once he has had his time to himself, he will trying making his way into my bedroom to sleep next to me.
Either way, if you are giving the love and care your cat needs, they love you. It is just taking time for you to see it or for them to express it.
I feel what is most important is reading your cats behavior, because their stand offishness or fear towards someone, could not exactly mean they do not like them.
