Ann Baker started with the Ragdoll breed in the 1960s. Her neighbors cat got into an accident and Ann Baker believed after the accident that Josephine, her neighbors cat had developed a limp like personality when held. Josephine was a white 'Angora type' cat. Ann Baker found Blackie and neighborhood cat that has Persian like features to breed with Josephine. When Ann Baker started out she was not getting recognition for the breed. She created her own organization to record the pedigrees for Ragdolls. It was called International Ragdoll Cat Association (IRCA). She only gave the breeding rights to a couple that later on made the Ragamuffins breed. Which were different than the Ragdolls, because couple wanted to be free of Ann Baker's restrictions.
